The Faculty of Veterinary Science and the Onderstepoort Veterinary Institute (OVI) are situated in close proximity to each other. This affords unique opportunities for co-operation, in terms of facilities and expertise, that are unequalled in Africa, and indeed, in most parts of the world, to study tropical and subtropical infectious and parasitic diseases. The Exotic Diseases Division is a high-security laboratory of the OVI where highly contagious diseases such as foot-and-mouth disease are studied. The staff of the Department of Veterinary Tropical Diseases collaborate closely and work in multidisciplinary teams with research workers of the OVI.

The Department of Veterinary Tropical Diseases is eager to accept and pursue the opportunities and challenges created by the new South Africa in its new facilities and to be responsive to and address the needs of the different communities of the country and the subcontinent in terms of animal health and production. It is well placed to take part and to identify new role players, particularly in southern Africa, but also further afield and to establish networks to ensure that recent and relevant information and technology are applied in training, research and services pertaining to a variety of aspects of infectious and parasitic diseases. It is well known that many of these diseases are often the biggest constraint to sustainable socio-economic development of communities in the subcontinent and the rest of Africa.
